Hospital discharge day is one of the most stressful transitions a patient and their family face. The physician signs the order, the nurse hands over a stack of paperwork, the pharmacy sends new prescriptions — and then someone has to figure out how the patient actually gets from the hospital bed to their next destination. For patients who use a wheelchair, require a stretcher, or have mobility limitations that rule out a personal vehicle, the transportation question is not trivial. Rideshare apps like Uber and Lyft are not equipped to handle wheelchair ramps, stretcher lifts, or the patient-assist protocols that hospital discharges demand.
Dream Care Rides is a private-pay non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) provider serving Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. Our headquarters in Olympia Fields gives us a significant logistics advantage for patients discharging to South Side neighborhoods and south suburban communities — areas that are historically underserved by NEMT brokers and Medicaid transport providers. We accept same-day bookings for ambulatory and wheelchair transport, and we offer advance-scheduled stretcher service for post-surgical patients. This planner tool is designed to help you prepare before discharge day, so you know exactly which entrance your driver will use, what paperwork to have ready, and what to tell our dispatch team when you call (708) 505-6994.
Select your hospital, mobility needs, and destination to generate a personalized discharge transport plan.

3. Destination Type

Every year, thousands of Chicago-area patients are discharged from hospitals with mobility needs that exceed what a standard sedan or rideshare vehicle can provide. A patient recovering from hip replacement surgery cannot fold into the back seat of a Toyota Camry. A stroke patient who requires a wheelchair-accessible vehicle with a ramp needs a driver trained in securement systems and patient-assist protocols. A patient being transferred on a stretcher from a downtown hospital to a south suburban nursing home needs a vehicle with a hydraulic lift, climate control, and safety restraints — none of which Lyft or Uber provide.
Dream Care Rides operates a fleet of wheelchair-accessible vehicles (WAVs) and stretcher transport units staffed by trained drivers who understand the specific requirements of hospital discharge transport. Our drivers know which entrance to use at each hospital, how to coordinate with discharge nurses, and how to handle the delays that are a routine part of the discharge process. We do not require insurance authorization, Medicaid approval, or broker scheduling — you call us directly, and we dispatch a vehicle.
Pricing is straightforward: ambulatory sedan transport ranges from $45 to $65 depending on distance, wheelchair-accessible transport from $65 to $85, and stretcher transport from $95 to $175. There are no hidden fees, no surge pricing, and no cancellation penalties for hospital discharge delays beyond the patient's control. For more detailed pricing, use our NEMT Cost Calculator.
Each Chicago-area hospital has its own NEMT pickup and drop-off procedures. Knowing the correct entrance before discharge day prevents confusion, reduces wait times, and ensures your driver can position the vehicle where hospital staff expect it. Below is a logistics summary for each of the 10 hospitals included in our planner tool.
Northwestern Memorial is one of Chicago's busiest discharge hospitals. Ambulatory and wheelchair patients use the Huron St drop-off circle, which has ADA-compliant curb cuts and covered canopy access. Stretcher vehicles should use the Erie St ambulance bay and coordinate with the discharge nurse for east loading dock access. The Huron St valet area is congested between 10 AM and 2 PM — plan accordingly. For dedicated Northwestern transport information, visit our Northwestern Memorial transport page.
Rush discharges are managed through the Harrison St NEMT lane, which accommodates both wheelchair and stretcher vehicles. Rush is known for discharge delays of 30 to 60 minutes after physician sign-off due to pharmacy and medication reconciliation requirements. Dream Care Rides drivers are trained to wait at the designated NEMT zone during these delays. See our Rush University transport page for more details.
UChicago Medicine's primary NEMT entrance is on Maryland Ave at 58th St. The discharge desk is on the second floor of the Mitchell Hospital tower. Maryland Ave experiences congestion during nursing shift changes at 3 PM and 7 PM. Stretcher vehicles use the loading area south of 58th St. Visit our UChicago Medicine transport page for complete logistics.
Stroger Hospital serves a high volume of patients and discharge wait times can extend 2 to 4 hours after the physician signs off. Ambulatory and wheelchair patients use the Ogden Ave main entrance. Stretcher vehicles must use the Wood St emergency department bay and obtain security clearance. Plan for extended wait times when discharging from Stroger.
Illinois Masonic's main entrance on Wellington Ave has a covered canopy suitable for ambulatory and wheelchair pickup. The circular drive can be tight for larger NEMT vehicles. Stretcher transport uses the Nelson St emergency department entrance. Discharge paperwork is processed on each patient floor rather than a central desk.
Sinai Chicago processes discharges through the first-floor social work office. The Fairfield Ave entrance provides ground-level access for ambulatory and wheelchair patients. Stretcher vehicles use the Ogden Ave ambulance bay and must check in with hospital security. Street parking on Fairfield Ave is limited — drivers should plan for curbside pickup only.
Mercy Hospital has a streamlined discharge process with a covered portico on Michigan Ave for ambulatory and wheelchair patients. The 26th St entrance is reserved for stretcher and emergency vehicles. Mercy's Bronzeville location is convenient for patients heading to South Side neighborhoods.
Loyola is a Level 1 trauma center with strict vehicle access protocols. All transport drivers must check in at the transport desk in the main lobby. The First Ave entrance has a covered canopy for ambulatory and wheelchair patients. Stretcher vehicles use the Roosevelt Rd emergency department entrance. Surgical patient discharges commonly experience 1 to 2 hour delays.
NorthShore Evanston has an efficient discharge process. The Ridge Ave main entrance offers valet service and wheelchair-accessible automatic doors. Stretcher vehicles use the Central St entrance and must coordinate with nursing staff. The first-floor pharmacy is located near the main lobby for convenient prescription pickup.
Lurie Children's requires all transport drivers to check in at the family resource desk. Pediatric patients may need car seats or specialized restraint systems — confirm requirements with the charge nurse before booking. The Chicago Ave entrance handles ambulatory and wheelchair patients. Stretcher vehicles use the Pearson St entrance and should coordinate 30 minutes before pickup.

Discharge delays are one of the most common frustrations for patients and families. A physician may sign the discharge order at 10 AM, but the patient may not physically leave the hospital until 1 PM or later. Pharmacy delays, final lab results, insurance authorization for post-acute care, and nursing staff workload all contribute to the gap between the order and the actual departure. At busy hospitals like Rush and Stroger, delays of 2 to 4 hours are not unusual.
Dream Care Rides does not charge cancellation fees for hospital discharge delays that are beyond the patient's control. If your discharge is delayed, call our dispatch team at (708) 505-6994 to update your pickup time. Our drivers are experienced with hospital wait times and can adjust their schedule. We recommend calling when the nurse begins the final discharge process — this is typically 30 to 45 minutes before the patient is physically ready to leave.

Not every hospital discharge ends at home. Many patients are transferred to skilled nursing facilities, inpatient rehabilitation centers, or long-term acute care hospitals. These facility-to-facility transfers often require signed physician transport orders, advance notification to the receiving facility's admissions department, and coordination between the discharging hospital's case manager and the receiving facility's intake team. Dream Care Rides handles these transfers regularly and our dispatch team can help coordinate timing between both facilities.
For patients requiring stretcher transport to a nursing home or rehab facility, advance booking is strongly recommended. Our stretcher vehicles are equipped with hydraulic lifts, safety restraints, and climate control. For wheelchair transport to facilities, same-day service is typically available. Contact us at (708) 505-6994 to discuss your specific facility transfer needs.
